The use of electricity has become an integral part of everyday life, particularly now that cell phones has become ever more powerful and ubiquitous. For many of us, these devices are kept by our side all the time and they have revolutionized how we communicate. With all of their benefits, however, they also have drawbacks – one of them being increased exposure to low frequency electromagnetic fields (or EMF), which is created whenever electricity flows along a line or through an appliance.  

Exposure to low frequency EMFs can interfere with the electromagnetic systems inside of our bodies. Particularly, the brain, the heart, and mitochondria (the power generators of our cells) can be particularly susceptible to EMF interference. In addition, because our own biology can get disrupted, EMF exposure can worsen inflammatory problems.

Chronic high levels of low frequency EMF exposure have been linked to:

  • Insomnia
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Brain fog
  • Dizziness and vertigo
  • Frequent illnesses
  • HPA axis dysfunction (also known as adrenal fatigue)
  • Hormone imbalances
  • Cancer or increased in cancer risk

So in today’s post, instead of suggesting a series of goals for you to consider, we’re covering our top 8 tips on how to reduce your exposure to low frequency EMF.  

Let’s start with the sleeping area, as it’s particularly important because we send one-third of our life sleeping. To minimize EMF in your sleep space, you can do the following:

  • Shut off electricity in bedroom during sleeping hours. This can be accomplished manually by turning off the breakers or automatically with a demand switch. This will eliminate electric field exposure while sleeping. 
  • Use a good old wind-upalarm clock rather than an electric alarm clock. Both battery-operated and plug-in alarm clocks emit radiation. 
  • Use green plants to absorb EMF.

Now let’s move onto cell phones. When using a cell phone, keep these tips in mind.

  • Use a headset (ideally a hollow tube headset) or speaker phone when using a cell phone. Headsets emit significantly less radiation than cell phones, and using the speaker reduces radiation to the head.
  • Before making a call, check that there is a good signal. Studies have shown that cell phone emit significantly less radiation when the signal is strong.
  • Store your phone as far away from your body as possible. For example, when you’re on the go, store your phone in your purse or bag rather than in your pocket. When not in use, cell phones still send out intermittent signal to connect with the nearby cell phone towers, so there is still radiation being emitted.
  • Text more, talk less on your cell phone. Texting emits less radiation than during voice communication, and texting also takes the phone further away from the head.
  • Limit children’s phone use. Young children’s brains can absorb twice as much cell phone radiation as those of adults.
